Farewell, My Lovely is the nineteenth episode of Season 7 of Pretty Little Liars. It aired on June 20, 2017.

Synopsis

Convinced they know who A.D. is, the Liars gear up for a confrontation. Spencer, Hanna, and Caleb team up to investigate and discover new information about Charlotte’s death. Meanwhile, Mary Drake returns with a gift for Spencer and Alison.[1]. It was the Lost Woods Resort.

Plot

Farewell, My Lovely (36)

The girls believe Mona is A.D.

Tanner tries to fasten the process of getting signatures on arrest warrants. Aria tells the cops she called a friend to open her trunk because there's something caught in the release and her keys are in the trunk. The cop still tries to get the trunk open. He manages to shake the trunk open but before he can see inside he gets a code on his radio and turns to that instead. Aria uses the time to grab her keys, she then tells him it's fine and he walks away. The Liars gather around Caleb, who informs them that Mona is the creator of the game. Spencer tells them that they need Mona to explain everything to the cops. Spencer spots a note in the wine bottle by the door. Ezra informs them that Aria is not answering her phone. Ezra lectures the girls on excluding Aria because them forgiving each other and sticking together is the only edge they ever had over A.D. and now they don't. Ezra leaves and Caleb offers to help find Aria. As Aria drives she talks to Dunhill's body, she's mad that it made sounds in the trunk so she had to check it. Stating she would have driven straight to Spencer's and given the police an anonymous tip about the body. Aria hypothesizes that she can fix things by going to the police with Dunhill's body as his murderer.

Emily promises Alison she won't let her get hurt

Mona arrives at her apartment, to find the game board gone, a note replaces it telling her to meet at the Three Crows Diner. Hanna and Caleb decide to tail Mona. Spencer meets Mary at the Lost Wood Resort; Mary gives her the building, as she'll need money for lawyers and it's already in Alison and Spencer's names. Spencer expresses gratitude and Mary wishes she could get them out of their mess, Spencer tells her that unfortunately no one can do that. They say goodbye to each other, as Mary walks off, Spencer grabs her hand and tells her to be careful, Mary extends the same back to her and leaves. At Alison's house, Alison believes their baby will be sent to different homes and then put in an institution after she gives birth in jail. Emily tells her they won't let it happen but Alison enlightens her that they won't be able to stop it. Emily promises not to let them hurt Alison. Aria walks toward the police station but is stopped by Ezra, who urges them to leave Rosewood now. Aria wants to make things right with her friends but Ezra doesn't care about them, telling her she's in the clear and could just leave. Aria tells him that Dunhill's body is in the trunk of her car.

Mona tells Caleb someone stole the game from her and that they're all out of their league

At the Diner, Hanna and Caleb stake out to see who she is waiting for. Spencer arrives and Hanna and Caleb begin to argue over Mona, Spencer comments that they argue like a married couple, as she doesn't yet know they are already married. Caleb goes to watch further and Spencer tells Hanna that Mary gave her the Lost Woods as a mortgage to pay for lawyers, which freaks Hanna out. Spencer questions if they should get Mona but they look to see Caleb is now sat down talking with Mona. Mona informs Caleb that she doesn't have the game, and that it was a bad idea her playing around with it. She says that someone is always stealing the game from her and that they are all out of their league. He goes to grab a piece of paper but Mona stops him and reads it. She begins to leave and Caleb begins to follow her but Hanna and Spencer arrive in the diner and Mona runs out. They run after her but she's gone, Caleb begins to search around for secret exits and finds a door. Spencer comments that Mona may have used the door the night Charlotte was killed. Spencer and Caleb go exploring wherever it leads and Hanna goes back to tell the others. Tanner finally gets signatures on arrest warrants. Aria and Ezra talk about her situation, Aria is refusing to leave her friends behind but Ezra tells her they gave up the right to be her friends when they shut her out. Aria blames herself for helping A.D. Ezra considers helping her friends out and decides to help her get rid of the body. But when they get back to the car, the body has been removed already.

Hanna finds Mona in the bell tower dressed as a high school version of herself

Emily has a nightmare that A.D. tries to take Alison. She wakes Alison up informing her they both fell asleep. The game board starts up with an old video of Alison talking to Ian at the kissing rock. Emily shuts the phone off and they hear the police knock at their door. As Spencer and Caleb search, he informs her that he doesn't believe Mona is A.D. as she was too scared of something or someone and got a message telling her leave the diner. He then tells her that he and Hanna are married. She congratulates him and he apologizes for their relationship but Spencer tells him not to. Alison and Emily are picked up by Aria and Ezra, Alison apologizes to Aria for shutting her out as it's something she would have done in high school, Emily agrees on this and Aria accepts it. Hanna notices petals falling down over her and looks up at the bell tower. She goes inside to find Mona, dressed as her high school self. Mona greets her as if she is Charlotte. Hanna corrects her but Mona is in the past believing her to be Charlotte as the night Charlotte was released they met at the bell tower. Hanna questions why and Mona tells her that she had to. Mona informs Hanna that she knew Charlotte was faking being healthy and met her there to warn her not to repeat history. Charlotte happily teased Mona about high school, telling Mona that she did damage to the girls that make them question who they are. Charlotte told Mona that she was going start up another game that made everything before feel basic. Mona continues to warn her but Charlotte makes it clear that she is in control and not Mona.

Mona threatens Charlotte's life after Charlotte admits she's going to continue torturing everyone

Mona picks up an object and threatens Charlotte's life. Charlotte believes Mona won't do it, but she turns her around and presses the object into her back telling her she will stage her suicide. Charlotte becomes scared. As Mona believes that Hanna is Charlotte she refuses to be tricked again and tries to push her off the tower but Caleb arrives in time to catch her and push Mona down. Hanna works out that Mona killed Charlotte and tells them. They walk Mona out of the bell tower and Caleb questions taking her to the cops. Spencer tells him not to in her current condition. The group find two puzzle pieces tied to their car outside. Spencer, Hanna, Alison, Emily, Caleb, Aria, Ezra and Mona are in a room together. Ezra, Alison and Emily want to turn her in but Spencer still argues that she should not be in this state when she talks to the police telling them "Some enhanced interrogation and Mona could be gone forever". Alison questions why Mona is dressed like high school, Spencer tells them that Mona went back to a safe place, "The one place before everything went wrong where the worst she had to worry about was you being mean to her in the cafeteria." Aria suggests calling Dr. Sullivan to argue Mona's case. Spencer agrees and Caleb arrives. The Liars (minus Mona) leave Mona to be watched by Ezra and Caleb as they fill in the final pieces of the game. The game board uses augmented reality to show the girls where Dunhill's body is: Alison's Aunt Carol's house.

The girls are caught with shovels and arrested

The girls talk about digging Charles' symbolic grave and taking Dunhill's body. Aria tells them they don't have to and can just walk away, the girls are confused with Alison telling Aria that they don't want to but they have to. Aria tells them that if they want to stop everything they have to walk away from it. Spencer agrees and Hanna tells the girls that if they don't walk away they'll end up like the current state Mona is in. They begin to walk away and Spencer tells the grave "Rest in peace" in Latin. Moments later, Tanner and her team arrive at the site with arrest warrant for the girls. At the station the girls panic and Spencer tells them to tell the truth. Hanna questions how the truth will get them off, Spencer tells them they won't get the charges dropped, they're going to jail. Alison suggests that if Mona tells the truth they'll be shown mercy but Aria knows that isn't true the police want justice. Spencer adds that "Justice is a blindfolded bitch". Tanner tells them that the body was identified as Archer Dunhill, telling them that she has to do something before she talks to them. She then talks to Mary Drake, shocking the girls that Mary is there. Mary admits to killing Jessica DiLaurentis and frames herself for Dunhill's murder to get the girls off the hook.

Tanner then informs the girls that they are free to go because Mary's statement is full of credible details she wouldn't know unless she killed him. Aria questions Tanner as she thought they were guilty of something. Tanner tells them that what she can prove they have done and what she thinks they have done are two different things and the district attorney doesn't like complicated cases full of loose ends, only what makes sense. Spencer questions if Tanner believes Jessica, Tanner admits she believes Mary killed Jessica but leaves Dunhill out of her conclusion. Aria tells Spencer that she did it for Spencer and not to ask for an explanation. Mary comes out handcuffed and sees Spencer emotional, she non-verbally cues her to stay quiet.

The Liars watch the game board die as it ends

The girls go back to Mona, Spencer tells her that they called Dr. Sullivan, who is coming in a few hours. Hanna apologizes for pulling Mona into the game, Mona expresses gratitude of being needed by Hanna to play the game to help the girls and to take care of Charlotte. She then apologizes for messing up "taking care" of Charlotte. Spencer questions what she means by messing it up and Mona tells them that she fought with Charlotte before accidentally killing her in defense, as before they thought it was intentional. The church bell tolls and the girls go back to the game board, they watch it die. They question who ended it, Hanna tells them Mona did with her confession. Spencer tells the girls they can't be threatened anymore. Aria questions if she's sure and Spencer says she's not sure about anything except her friendship with them. At the end, someone dressed in black is driving with the game board in their car.

Notes

  • The flashforward scene from "Game Over, Charles" was revealed to have been one of Emily's nightmares all along, in which she and the Liars were hiding from an undead Archer Dunhill.
  • Mary Drake is giving Spencer and Alison the Lost Woods Resort to do with as they wish.
  • Mona is revealed as Charlotte's Killer. Knowing that she had not changed despite her therapy, she confronted Charlotte at the the chruch's bell tower in an attempt to scare her. They engaged into a fight where Mona accidentally killed Charlotte in self-defense by pushing her against a sharp pipe.
  • Mary Drake turns herself in for Archer's murder in a way to protect Spencer and her friends and gets arrested. She also reveals to the police that she is Jessica's Killer, much to Alison's shock.
  • The Liars have now completed Liar's Lament and the game is now dead. Although, A.D. had also saved the game pieces and drove out of town.

Title and Background

  • The title was revealed by Joseph Dougherty on Instagram.[2]
  • The title could refer to a book of the same name published in 1940 by Raymond Chandler. The book is about a detective trying to find a murderer while beginning an affair with a married woman. In the end, the woman is exposed as someone else and commits suicide after murdering her ex.
